Lately I feel like I’ve been having the same argument over and over again regarding feminism, sexism in society today, etc. etc. It’s shocking to me how many people I meet who actually believe that women enjoy all the same rights, luxuries and privileges as men. Don’t get me wrong, compared to even just 20 or 30 years ago, things ain’t so bad. BUT THEY’RE NOT GREAT EITHER. The one thing that KILLS me is the people who believe women are generally respected, nay, revered by our society today. I don’t want to make a sweeping generalization, but it’s usually men making this assumption because, let’s face it, they either don’t know better or don’t care. I can spout facts and statistics at you all day, and I gladly will, but here is an example of an email sent around to fraternity brothers that speaks volumes on how women are seen and objectified in society, and really illustrates how far we’ve yet to go before we can even begin to call our society “equal.” And before anybody says “hey, this is an extreme example and does not represent the real world.” No, you’re wrong, and if you’re saying that you probably don’t have a vagina.
Key points include: WOMEN WILL BE REFERRED TO AS “TARGETS”, AS THEY AREN’T ACTUAL PEOPLE LIKE MEN.
and
THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN RAPE AND NON-CONSENT.
